DESCRIPTION

Vazhaipoo vadai made out of banana flower, lentils and some spices. This is a yummy spicy traditional snack usually we love to have with some chutneys or as it is. Sometimes used to make vadacurry with leftover vadais. In my childhood days my grandma used to make this in holidays, which I enjoy a lot!!!

Prep Time: 3 hours 15 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Yields: 30 Vadai

INGREDIENTS

  • Cleaned banana flower – 1 1/2 Cup
  • Asafoetida – A pinch
  • Onion chopped – 1/4 Cup
  • Coriander & curry leaves – Handful
  • Salt – 2 Teaspoon
  • Oil – For deep frying

To Grind

  • Channa dal – 3/4 Cup
  • Urad dal – 4 Teaspoon
  • Rice – 2 Teaspoon
  • Dry red chillies – 5 Nos
  • Fennel seeds – 2 Teaspoon

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Wash dal for 2-3 times and soak it with ingredients given under “To grind” for about 3 hours

  • Clean & chop the banana flower roughly and keep aside

  • After 3 hours drain the soaked ingredients. Transfer it to a blender and grind it coarsely (not too fine) without adding water. Add only a teaspoon of water if the mixture is hard to grind

  • Transfer the mixture to a large bowl & add other ingredients and mix well

  • Meanwhile heat oil in a frying pan

  • Make small balls out of batter and flatten it with fingers and deep fry in oil

  • Remove fried vadai from oil once the it turns golden brown and bubble ceases

  • Drain the excess oil & let it cool

  • Enjoy vadai with tea/coffee with chutneys

NOTES

  • Banana flowers veins should be cleaned well before chopping

  • Can use few teaspoons of besan/gram flour in case the batter is loose to form vadai shape

  • Can use the leftover vadai for making "mor kuzhambu" or "vadacurry"
